famous painters of world

Jamini Roy

jamini Roy (Bengali 11 April 1887 – 24 April 1972) was an Indian painter.

Early life

Jamini Roy was born in 1887 into a middle-class family of land-owners in a village called Beliatore in the District of Bankura in Bengal .

When he was sixteen he was sent to study at the Government School of Art in Calcutta. He was taught to paint in the prevailing academic tradition drawing Classical nudes and painting in oils and in 1908 he received his Diploma in Fine Art.

he looked to the living folk and tribal art for inspiration. He was most influenced by the Kalighat Pat, with its bold sweeping brush-strokes. He moved away from his earlier impressionist landscapes and portraits and between 1921 and 1924 began his first period of experimentation with the Santhal dance as his starting point.

Style

His new style was threefold: to capture the essence of simplicity embodied in the life of the folk people; to make art accessible to a wider section of people; and to give Indian art its own identity. He was awarded the Padma Bhusan in 1954. His work has been exhibited extensively in international exhibitions and can be found in many private and public collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He spent most of his life living and working in Calcutta. Initially he experimented with Kalighat paintings. Jamini Roy died in 1972. He was survived by four sons and a daughter. Currently his successors (daughters-in-law and grand children and their children) stay at the home he had built in Ballygunge Place, Kolkata. His works can be found in various galleries across the globe as well as in his home.

Awards and honors

In 1934, he received a Viceroy's gold medal in an all India exhibition for one of his work. In 1954 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.

Paul Cézanne

He was born on 19 january 1839 and died on22 oct 1906 a french artist who laid foundation for rransition from 19th century conception  to new world of art. Cézanne can be said to form the bridge between late 19th century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic enquiry

He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes thatthat build up to form complex fields.

Early years and family

Paul Cézanne was born on 19th January 1839 in the South of France.[2] On 22 February, Paul was baptized in the parish church, with his grandmother and uncle .[2] His father, Louis-Auguste affording him financial security . At the age of ten Paul entered the Saint Joseph school, where he studied drawing. In 1852 Cézanne entered the Collège Bourbon (now Collège Mignet), He stayed there for six years, though in the last two years he was a day scholar.

Life and work

Cézanne's early work is often concerned with the figure in the landscape and includes many paintings of groups of large, heavy figures in the landscape, Later in his career, he became more interested in working from direct observation and gradually developed a light, airy painting style. Poussin "after nature" underscored his desire to unite observation of nature with the permanence of classical composition

Exhibitions and subjects

Cézanne's paintings were shown in the first exhibition of the Salon des Refusés in 1863, which displayed works not accepted by the jury of the official Paris Salon. The Salon rejected Cézanne's submissions every year from 1864 to 1869. He continued to submit works to the Salon until 1882. In that year, through the intervention of fellow artist Antoine Guillemet, he exhibited Portrait of Louis-Auguste Cézanne, Father of the Artist, reading 'l'Evénement', 1866 (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.), his first and last successful submission to the Salon.[14] Before 1895 Cézanne exhibited twice with the Impressionists (at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 and the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877). In later years a few individual paintings were shown at various venues, until 1895, when the Parisian dealer, Ambroise Vollard, gave the artist his first solo exhibition. Cézanne was compelled to design from his imagination, due to a lack of available nude models

Death

One day, Cézanne was caught in a storm while working in the field.[17] Only after working for two hours under a downpour did he decide to go home; but on the way he collapsed. he was put to bed, and he never left it again.[17] He died a few days later, on 22 October 1906.[17] He died of pneumonia

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (US   1841–1919) was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style.  He was famus As a celebrator of beauty, and especially feminine sensuality.he was the father of actor Pierre Renoir and filmmaker Jean Renoir.

Youth

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges,  the child of a working-class family. As a boy, he worked in a porcelain factory where his drawing talents led to him  to paint designs on fine china.[2] He also painted hangings for overseas missionaries and decorations on fans before he enrolled in art school.[3]

1862, he began studying art under Charles Gleyre in Paris. There he met Alfred Sisley, Frédéric Bazille, and Claude Monet.[4] At times during the 1860s, he did not have enough money to buy paint. Although Renoir first started exhibiting paintings at the Paris Salon in 1864,[5] recognition did not come for another ten years, due, in part, to the turmoil of the Franco-Prussian War.

Maturity

Renoir experienced his initial acclaim when six of his paintings were hung in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. In the same year, two of his works were shown with Durand-Ruel in London.[7]

On 15 january 1882 he made painting of famous composer richard wagner in 35 mintues .in 1883 he made 15 painting in1 month. While living and working in Montmartre, Renoir employed as a model Suzanne Valadon, who posed for him (The Bathers, 1885–87; Dance at Bougival, 1883)[10] and many of his fellow painters while studying their techniques; eventually she became one of the leading painters of the day. In 1890, he married Aline Victorine Charigohad already served as a model for Le Déjeuner des canotiers (Luncheon of the Boating Party, 1881), and with whom he had already had a child, Pierre, in 1885.[he had 3 sons. one of whom, Jean, became a filmmaker of note and another, Pierre, became a stage and film actor.

Artworks

Renoir's paintings are notable for their vibrant light and saturated colour, most often focusing on people in intimacy . The female nude was one of his primary subjects. His initial paintings show the influence of the colourism of Eugène Delacroix and the luminosity of Camille Corot. He also admired the realism of Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet, and his early work resembles theirs in his use of black as a color. As well, Renoir admired Edgar Degas' sense of movement. Another painter Renoir greatly admired was the 18th-century master François Boucher.[14] A fine exa mple of Renoir's early work, and evidence of the influence of Courbet's realism, is Diana, 1867. still a 'student' piece

The works of his early maturity were typically Impressionist snapshots of real life, full of sparkling colour and light. By the mid 1880s, however, he had broken with the movement to apply a more disciplined, formal technique to portraits and figure paintings, particularly of women, such as The Bathers, which was created during 1884–87. It was a trip to Italy in 1881, when he saw works by Raphael and other Renaissance masters, that convinced him that he was on the wrong path, and for the next several years he painted in a more severe style, in an attempt to return to classicism.[18] This is sometimes called his "Ingres period", as he concentrated on his drawing and emphasized the outlines of figures.[19]

After 1890, however, he changed direction again, returning to thinly brushed colour to dissolve outlines as in his earlier work. From this period onward he concentrated especially on monumental nudes and domestic scenes, fine examples of which are Girls at the Piano, 1892, and Grandes Baigneuses, 1887. A prolific artist, he made several thousand paintings. The warm sensuality of Renoir's style made his paintings some of the most well-known and frequently-reproduced works in the history of art. The single largest collection of his works—181 paintings in all—is at the Barnes Foundation,

Vincent Willem van Gogh

Vincent  (dutch)Born 30 March 1853 in Zundert  was a painter famous for rough beauty and bold colors . The son of a pastor Theodorus van Gogh, brought up in a religious and cultured atmosphere, Vincent was highly emotional and lacked self-confidence. Unfortunately there is virtually no information about Vincent van Gogh's first ten years. Van Gogh attended a boarding school in Zevenbergen for two years and then went on to attend the King Willem II secondary school in Tilburg for two more. At that time, in 1868, Van Gogh left his studies at the age of 15 and never returned. Van Gogh spent his early adulthood working for a firm of art dealers, traveling between The London and Paris, Vincent's uncles, were art dealers. His youngerbrother, wasnworking as an art dealer. Vincent van Gogh would remain in London for two more years. During that time he visited the many art galleries and museums and became a great admirer of British writers .Between 1860 and 1880, when he finally decided to become an artist,

In his life van Gogh had had two unsuitable and unhappy romances and had worked unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore, an art salesman, and a preacher in the Borinage (a dreary mining district in Belgium), where he was dismissed for overzealousness. he died in Netherlands Died 29 July 1890 (aged 37) His work was then known to only a handful of people and appreciated by fewer still. Van Gogh began to draw as a child, and he continued to draw .during the last two years of his life. In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks, consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings, sketches and prints. His work included self portraits, landscapes, still lifes of flowers, portraits and paintings of cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers.

from 1879 he worked as a missionary. he began to sketch people from the local community. The works of his early Dutch period are somber-toned, sharply lit, In 1885, he painted his first major work The Potato Eaters. In March 1886, he moved to Paris to join his brother Théo, the manager of Goupil's gallery. In Paris, van Gogh studied with Cormon, inevitably met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin, and discovered the French Impressionists. One day he had a fight with  gauguin , accidently his ear wwas chopped off . Later, he moved to the south of France and was impacted by the strong sunlight he found there. His work grew brighter in color, and he developed the unique and highly recognizable style that became fully realized during his stay in Arles in 1888. watchful eye of Dr. Gachet. In May of 1890hwent to live in Auvers-sur-Oise . Two months later he was dead, having shot himself "for the good of all." During his brief career he had sold one painting

Screen printing

Screen printing

Letter press---this most ancient method of printing. In this method letters are arranged one by one on a plate and printing is done from a raised plate form. Ink is applied on raised surface and paper is pressed. It is costly, time consuming, having less scope for creativity.

Off set printing----- it is printing from a flat surface. Material is transferred electronically to a printing plate. Ink is applied to plate, and then blanket wash on the press washes the plate clean except where the impression is located. The image is then transferred to paper.

Screen printing---it was invented by GUY MEOY (new yark) in 1936. Screens made up of metal silk, fabric are used for printing. In this stencil is made and placed on tact screen. Ink is passed over stencil –impression goes on to paper stock except where stencil prevents flow of ink. It can be done on any surface.

Material---------1 printing table       2 glass sheet    3 screen frames       4 c or g clamps      5 drying racks

6 nylon bolting cloth                        7 hammer, nails    8 screen coating      9 ammonium dichromate

10  5 star film        11 hydrogen peroxide       12 faster capillary film     13 chromo line film    14 bleach

15 printing frame      16 exposing table     17 squeegees     18 ink knife    19 paper, gum, PVC sheet, colors

Frames ------may be of wood, metal, but all adjacent sides are right angles .8*10, 10*12, 15*22,    jolts may be dovetail, half lap, mortise, and picture frame type.

Bolting cloth --- cloth are organdy, nylon, wire cloth of stainless steel, cooper. Named as per 8 to mesh count. The no multiplied by 10 will give details of holes in 1 inch sq. 40 no means 400 holes in 1 inch. high mesh count give fine details .less consumption of ink .but lower count is good 4 stickers ,labels ,posters , 50 no is good 4 letter pads , visiting cards .

Raxin tape --- ½ or 1 inch width

Nails -----13 mm

Squeegees   --- 4 inch wider than design with high hardness.

Printing base ---- flat with g clamp attached.

Modes of typesetting --------dtp setting ……graphic setting(photographic positive print out of yr matter)  art work—logos, designs , made on O H paper by artist .0.5 point pens ,Indian ink used 4 it . -----------------

Dry transparent sheets--- these r stencils of words used when dtp not available, borders, flowers, designs r on it.

Material required for exposing---- lath positive of printing matter or dtp print, art work, dry dip sheet 2 coating solution –polyvinyl alcohol emulsion 3 sensitizer-potassium or ammonium dichromate is used

4 film 5 black paper 6 hydrogen peroxide –used as developer 7 water, tray, scissor, 8 glass sheet 4 mm thick

Exposing—it is 3 types---- 5 star method ----it is simple, indirect method, film is red in color and very sensitive to light. It has half tone effect; means in one film u can have many shades. Photos can b printed with this, very good for printing. method—add 1;3 hydrogen peroxide and water – cut film larger than positive—put pos active  in read able position --- put glossy side(emulsion)on it.---put it contact box ,expose 4  100 sec , in arc lamp 1 ½ min – wash film in hydrogen peroxide and water 4 75 sec –wash in hot water---stick it on mesh – remove plastic sheet from it  -apply coating on both sides of film , fill up holes – stencil is ready for printing

Inks used 4 printing ----oil based ink         glass matt ink         PVC ink      foil ink       politic ink     ceramic ink        p c b ink         metal ink       textile ink

Material used in printing ---- printing base       g clamp      pace tape     inks     reducer     thinner

Kerosene      squeeze       cotton waste      drying racks

Direct method--- it is used for big banners   it has short life , it is green in color ,mix 100 ml silkote63, 1ammonium dichromate , 3 drops of water or add ammonium dichromate and coating solution 1;10 ratio

2 Coating solution 100 ml silkote sanitizing solution  10 ml ammonium bichrote add both 10;1 add water stir well . Apply to screen, dry in dark room, expose it develop it, stencil will b green ----di

rect coating is also available

chromatin film method-0----  film is blue in color  1  add coating solution and sensitizer 10;1 ratio   ---put emulsion side up ,put it on screen – apply coating on back side film is fixed --- dry it , remove plastic – keep negative  in readable position  ,pries with glass ,expose 45 sec –wash it – put paper film , stencil is ready 4 exposure

Types of printing

ceramic printing 850 –900 c  ---------glass color   500 ---550  c    hand painting , screen painting, transfer print , cutting print sand blasting , acid etching

Discovery of photography

Discovery of photography

Image projection came first. A narrow beam of light entering a dark room will project an image ,this phenomenon was noted by Aristotle in 4thcenbc.

Ad 1490 LEONERDO DA VINCI realized the potential of camera obscure ( Italian means dark room). In next century lenses were incorporated to sharpen the image.

The 17th century box models were made all over EUROPE but we donot have films.

1827 FRENCH man JOSEPHnicephone showed the first picture copied from nature in London  a English man William Hanry fox also developed film but in1829 louis Daguerre announced discovery of copper plate process, but fox had produced a method by which any number of copies can obtained , the principle of modern photography, the negative positive images called catotypes.

1851 Frederick scoth archer introduced wet plate process in which glass plate was coated with layer of light sensitive material .this had to be exposed and processed whilst still wet .out door photography had to set up a dark room tent .

1880 dry plate method was introduced

Magic box

Since 1839 camera were popular but with paper back roll film in realty took off in 1890

1925 lecia 35 mm was introduced by Ernst leitz in Germany

1935 first SLR came

1940 lenses with coated surface was introduced

1950 penta prism method was used to made3 SLR which is very popular till today.

HOW TO LEARN PHOTO GRAPHY

1 handling a camera—may be parallel or vertical should be steady .if shutter speed is less use tripode

2 understanding film

3 understanding color and light effects

4 understanding patterns, shapes ,lines, texture, color contrast, color harmony

5 use flash ,bounce flash , and available light

THEMES OF PHOTOGRAPHY

1 landscape                            2 sky and water                 3 buildings               4 interiors                 5 sports                          6 people                                 7 studio portraits               8 children                 9 nude                      10 still life  11 press reports                   12 animals                           13 trees and flowers   14 special effects---close ups—soft focus---multi expose – sandwich-infra red effects

Special effects using special films- in this whole photo will come hazy and dotted one – as we give extra burning to negative, and use of blur method are need to understand.

Types of cameras

1 view finder cameras

a)        Fixed focus lenses—most 110 camera have this lenses every thing about 2 meter away is sharp

b)      Front cell focusing---in this form lens is fixed to infinite but front element is fixed forward and backward . it adjust up to about 1.5 meter

c)       Whole lens focusing ----they r screw out focus system which shift whole lens away from or towards the film.

d)      Zone focusing—divides the area by pictorial marks on camera

2 Range finder cameras

a)       This type of cameras have a built in device called coupled range finder with double image or split image center

b)      Double and split image---in double –two images are visible ,one has normal view finder ,the 2nd is reflected from a moveable mirror. in split image image  is  splitd

c)       Parallax error—in this view finder shows one image and lens see another image .

3   Automatic focusing

a)       In this point the camera to subject and half press the shutter release button to get focusing

4 Reflex cameras

In this type a silvered mirror set inside the camera at 45 degree reflects the lens image upward on to a horizontal  glass screen which act as focusing device . image is reversed unless prism finder is used when shutter release button is pressed mirror goes up and shutter operates.

a)SINGLE LENS REFLEX CAMERAS

modern cameras have five sided prism called penta prism on the top of horizontal glass to avoid viberation caused by movement of mirrors which turns the image on viewing screen . camera can be used vertically or horizontally

b)      TWIN LENS REFLEX

SLR having two prism r called twin lens , single slr has two problems , 1st while taking pics view is bleached out  2nd vibration  is caused by mirrors with 2 lens is removed . one mirror used for focusing 2nd for seeing the object .

5 instant print cameras --- get the foto on the sport , very expensive

Films

1 orthochromatic films

They are sensitive only to blue, violet and green region

2 Panchromatic films--sensitive to whole spectrum

3 color films—are two types slide films and negative films—both r balanced for day and night type

Lens----see in photography book

Filters ---

Gelatin filters – they r made by dissolving the appropriate dyes in gelatin and then coated it on glass when dry gelatins is peeled off the glass and cut to size normally -1 mm thick and flat

Plastic filters--- latest type r made of allyldiglycol carbonate polymer reffered as CR 39 were first made in 1940

Glass filters –made of glass-

Gradual filters------------r build by subjecting  the material to repeated dips of diminishing depth in a weak solution of colored dye until the desired density is achieved

U V FILTER---- used to absorb ultra violet radiations and most worth at 1000 mtr at sea there r two types 1st absorb the blue also  2nd absorb the radiation

N D FILTER – when smallest aperture is inadequate at sea or in bright sun light nd filter is used to reduce the light its power is denoted in q factor .most use full r 0.3 , 0.6 ,0.9 , and requires 123 stop increase.

COLOR COREETION FILTERS----used in b& w photography

a)       Light yellow – used for portraits .they produce natural skin tone ,light hair and slightly blue eyes

b)      Medium and deep yellow – use full for snow and darkening blue shadows

c)       Green – it is best for landscapes and out door portraits

d)       Light green  reduces red ,useful under artificial light

e)       Light blue  --least used absorb maximum red

f)        Orange --- ideal for winter pics in sunshine with snow , it lightens red, yellow and darken blue ,green and removes haze and uv

g)       Red – details r often lost ,sky may become black clouds may show stark

STEEP CUT FILTERS-----it has 3 colors yellow , cyan, magenta

Magenta  transmits  red and blue and absorb green

Cyan transmits blue and green and absorb red

Yellow transmits red and green and absorb blue – each transmit 2/3 of visible spectrum

NARROW CUT TRICOLOR FILTER it has 3 color it reflects 1/3 of spectrum used in b&w

COLOR CONVERTION FILTERS--- used to convert day light film to night light or vice versa 80 a used to convert day light to tungsten 85 b tungsten to day light

COLOR COMPENSATING FILTERS-  USED IN ENLARGERS

COLOR PRINTING FILTERS –it has similar effects as cc filters  r used in enlargers lamphouse  between light source and negatives

POLARISING FILTERS – used to eliminate reflections from shiny material, controls rendering of blue sky by darkening it

SKY LIGHT FILTER – pale pink in color used to absorb uv in color photography

GRADUAL FILTERS- they alter only half frame-blue ,tabacco ,grey ,red ,yellow r popular

CREATIVE FILTERS—STAR BURST ,,,PRISM –make more images ,,,,diffractions

STAR BURST—they produce stars numbering from 2 to 72 also known as spectra, snow cross , cross screen .

DIFFRACTION FILTERS----produce rain bow effect, works best with nd filter

DIFFUSERS –used to diffuse light

No 1 used to soft light             no 2 close ups                 3 diffuse high lights             4 pimples

5  hazy back effects                  6 rain effects                  7 & 8 glass effects

Fog and sand filters

Color fring filters used on flash red blue , green in color

Multi color filters these r sandwich of 2 filters red & blue ,orange &green ,yellow & pink other variation is mixture of nd and gradual filter

VIGNETTES AND MASKS

PAN VISION FILTER—used in cine work it only for viewing ,it modifies sensetivy of eye to  panchromatic  film

MONOCHROME FILTERS – used to have dark amber or brown

SAFE LIGHT FILTER—used in dark rooms

HEAT ABSORBING FILTERS – used enlargers to avoid damage to negtive

Shutter

There r two type of shutters – leaf shutter and focal plane shutter

A)      Leaf shutter consist of number of metal blades that form light proof disc, when button is pressed it opens to maximum and close down, these r smooth working ,free from several mechanical problems but not fit for using camera with electronic flash because maximum shutter speed is 1/500

B)      Focal plane shutters r built into camera body ,it consist of two blades directly in front of the film. During exposure there is slit variation, mostly used in SLR have shutter speed up to 1/2000 with normally x at 1/60

Close up attachments

1         supplementary lenses-----------these are macro ,converters lenses

2          Extension tubes---------fitted between camera body and lenses increases distance between back of camera lens and film helps in close focusing . normally in set 0f 3, not used in auto control .

3         Reversal rings --------it enables the lens to attached back to front used in close up

4         Bellows ----r same as extension tubes but have advantage of adjustment , must b used on tripod ,expensive but useful to increase distance between film and lens thus increase image growth.

Applied photography

All these tech we use in photo shop now

1          print finishing or touching

2          chopping extra

3          contact print

4          hand coloring

5          B &W to color prints

6           Sandwich fotos

7          Montage ---collage

8          Image distortion

9          Shading and dodging -----

Flash guns

A burst of flash is very useful for good  Grian for portrait and action photography .

How flash works---

Energy of battery is stored in capacitor .when shutter release button is pressed this energy passes through a low pressure glass tube which gives it glow and strikes the object . to get synchronization hot shoe or pc cord is used . most of camera have both . most of slr camera have focal plan shutters which moves vertically and horizontally .in slow speed only 2 blinds uncover the whole frame.

AA size cells are used in guns , they are of 5 types

zinc carbon battery ----mostly Indian made ,cheap ,but easily leaked ,don’t use

zinc choloride battery---better than zinc carbon ,but leakage problem

alkaline battery ---most popular , runs 3 times better –duracell , Panasonic is best

nickel cadmium or nicad batteries  ---recharge able and  best

lithium batteries -----sanyo , Panasonic are best used for camera body.

Types of flashguns

1         manual –this is simple electronic gun with on off switch and neon ready light . on the gun ,wait for neon light to appear and fire. Amount of light is fixed ,control the light through aperture.

2         Automatic ----they have auto sensors cell ,cell measures the light reflected .speed of film used to determine the aperture .most guns has Thyristor control ,which retains the unused power in capacitor and helps in fast recycle . most guns has guide no ,which helps to calculate correct exposure . ex—a guide no of 33 from 3 meters means you use f 11 for exposure.

3         Dedicated gun –it is designed for particular camera body .hot shoe tells the film you are using . they  use TTL system to calculate the correct angle.

Flash should be attached to right hand hammerhead to remove the problem of red eye.

Bounce flash is tech for soft light . for manual flash increase f by 1 point .light bounces back best on white color than any other color.

Fill in flash is used for out door photography

Multi exposure –can be done on tripod .make the subject static ,make exposure with cable release ,remove lens cap and expose

2 or more flashes can be used for portraits , 1 for back ground ,  1 filler , 1 main ,

Hot shoe adopter- ---most camera comes with hot shoe but extra can be used to connect coaxial cable ,

Slave units -----trigger cells----foto electric circuits helps to fire

Remote sensor ---used in front of flash

Ring flash is good for out door portraits

HOW TO BUY A TRIPOD

TRIPOD SHOULD BE EXTRA STURDY,WITH BALL HEAD JOINT AND SCREW THREAD ON BASE PLATE WHERE CAMERA IS FITTED ARE BEST AMONG ALL MODELS.

TRIPODE MADE OF METAL WITH SECTION DIVISION AND RELEASE CLIPS ARE MORE USEFULL.

DANCE TERMS -GLIMPSE OF BOOK ON DANCE COMING SOON

Kalbelia dance was originally invented by the joint efforts of now famous danseuse Gulabi Sapera,

The idea of “Indian classical dance” emerged in the 1930-s and 40s, in the writings of Ananda Coomaraswamy, Mohan Khokar, Anand Mulk Raj, and was aimed at upgrading the social and cultural status of dance and dancers.
