  1. GHUNGROOS -

    A musical anklet made of small metallic bells strung together tied to feet of classical Indian dancers also known as GHUNGROO, GHUNGHRU or SALANGAI (IN TAMIL LANGUAGE) NUPUR in Sanskrit. A gong or kinkri is fitted inside the empty bulbous shaped hole of metallic, when gong strikes the metal it produces a sound. The sound produced by Ghungroos vary greatly depend upon metallic composition and size. GHUNGROOS produce sound so it is kept in the category of TABLA and MANJIRA, or DHAN instruments, which can produce sound after strike, but GHOONGROOS, are united with dance only.
    As compare to west where dance is highly depending upon movements of body , Indian classical dance specially KATHAK is having vital role of foot moves . So it is natural that importance of GHUNGROOS is more.
    MEANING OF GHUNGROO
    NUPUR means a thing which can fill the empty space. A gong or kinkri is fitted inside the empty bulbous shaped hole of metallic, when gong strikes the metal it produces a sound. in other words we can say that sound produced by Ghungroos fill the emptiness of world with melodious sound .The sound produced by Ghungroos vary greatly depend upon metallic composition and size.GHUNGROO is a DESAJ word . The word GHUNGROO became a part of language in later stage.
    BIRTH & DEVELOPMENT OF GHUNGROO
    Since pashana yuga people used to dance to express their feelings. To produce sound they used dry beans of vegetables and fruits. Dry seed in the vegetables or fruits strike the skin and produce sound. When civilization was developed, dances become the part of raj durbars, much type of instruments were made, kinkri were filled inside the empty holes to produce sound, which in long run took the shape of GHUNGROOS. T he great saga BHARAT gave too much importance to RASA or emotions but in fact movements of limbs is essential to fill the grace in moves rasa will come forward. To enhance the grace GHUNGROOs plays an important role.
    STRUCTURE OF GHUNGROOS
    As per NANDIKESHWAR writer of ABHINAYA DARPAN -Ghungoors should be made of KANSA or PEETAL All the Ghunroos should be moon shaped and uniform in size . A blue color thread should be used to tie the Ghungroos, and difference between them should be of one finger. Thread should not be tied with the KUNDA or Hook of Ghungroo, instead give a knot to the thread and put the Ghungroo in thread and again knot the thread. In this way Ghungroos will produce best sound. While purchasing bells make sure that they should not be sharp. For a beginner dancer 100 bells are sufficient which can be increased up to 250 Ghungroo per feet. Old ghungroos become soft and produce good sound
    IMPACT OF GHUNGROOS
    Sound produced by Ghungroos should be melodious, so that it can entertain the audience. A soothing sound gives eternal peace. Now a day’s ladies use Ghungroos to adorn their clothes, even used in ornaments.
